Torrevieja is famous the world over for its Habaneras Choral Song Festival, which takes place in August - this harps back to the days when travelling sailors, transporting salt to South America (Cuba in particular), brought back new songs and dances from those far away lands. Although salt is still important for the economy of Torrevieja, it has been overtaken by tourism and property development, which has grown enormously during recent years. Much of the new property that has been built in the Torrevieja area has been purchased by foreign investors, many wishing to purchase their own home in the sun, the majority for use as holiday homes but a growing number for permanent re-location. British, German and Scandinavian people in particular have chosen to settle in this area, and many facilities are in place to cater for this growing foreign community. There is of course also plenty of facilities for the resident Spanish population. One of the major turist attractions of Torrevieja is "Semana Santa (The Easter Festival) which depicts the story of Jusus, there is a parade every night for the whole of Easter Week. A little south of Torrevieja is an area known as the Orihuela Costa, 16km of coastline with some excellent beaches, golf courses and facilities, this area has an even greater percentage of foreign residents and includes the resorts of Punta Prima, Playa Flamenca, La Zenia, Cabo Roig and Campoamor.
